Golden Week

Golden Week is a nearly week long holiday that starts on April 29th and ends on May 5th. I say nearly because the holiday this year is interrupted by two days of work on May 1st and May 2nd, which are not public holidays.

Each of the days commemorates a different holiday.

April 29th is Showa Day (Showa No Hi). This holiday was established to celebrate the birthday of the Showa Emperor. In Japan, two systems for counting the calendar year are used. One is the calendar year that the rest of the world uses. The other, however, is called Nengo in Japanese and marks the years of the reign of the emperor during that nengo. The Showa years are from 1926 to 1989. So, for example, 1926 is also Showa 1, 1927 is also Showa 2, etc. Since the 29th falls on a Sunday this year, this holiday is bumped up to the 30th.

May 3rd is Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpoukinenbi). As per the name, it commemorates the promulgation of the Japanese constitution in 1947. This holiday was enacted to encourage Japanese to reflect on democracy and the Japanese government.

May 4th is Greenery Day (Midori No Hi). This day celebrates the lush, greenness of nature and is intended to encourage people to go out and enjoy its blessings.

May 5th is Children’s Day (Kodomo No Hi). This day celebrates children and their happiness. Wherever you go, you often see Koinobori (carp-shaped flags) flying high and families out celebrating with their children.

Although the holiday has a slight break in between, many Japanese take the days off in between and travel both domestically and internationally.

Are there any long, special holidays in your country in May? Let us know in the comments below!

Uncharted Kingdom: BLog – April 27

Occasionally I’ll end up working on a manga here at the office that I love so much… that I have to track it down in Japanese and buy it myself because I can’t get the story out of my head.

This week’s obsessive purchase was “Sono Yo no Dokoka, Chizu no Nai Kuni” by Nikke Taino. It will be translated as “The Uncharted Kingdom of Oraie”.

This week’s obsessive purchase was “Sono Yo no Dokoka, Chizu no Nai Kuni” by Nikke Taino. It will be translated as The Uncharted Kingdom of Oraie.

I had seen the cover many times before as I like to make weekly trips to the Tsutaya in my neighborhood with a huge Yaoi selection, but I’d never looked very deeply into it.

Kingdom-Cover

At first glance it looks like a story about ninjas, and although I am sad that is not the case, it was a REALLY well-written fantasy about a country walled off from the rest of the world to contain a mysterious illness.

Our handsome protagonist finally found a helicopter pilot willing to fly near enough to see over the high walls, and then stole his parachute to sneak his way in, only to promptly be locked up behind bars.

Kingdom-Spread

The gorgeous royal nobility (see cover) takes a liking to the half-brilliant, half-stupid, very handsome young man, and takes him into his family home to work as staff and share some knowledge and information from the outside world.

This gorgeous nobility, however, is something like 11-12 years old. Technically he is the king, since the rest of his family has passed away due to the illness.

I fell in love with the moving love story between the king and the man who was meant to give up his life for him so that he may live on.

There’s a lot more plot and dramatic twists going on in this volume than you’ll find in most yaoi manga, so the beauty of it really drew me in!

Also, it was really sexy.

Keep your eye out for this one! It’s on the way…*

Sara Sensei’s BLog (BL Log) April 20

Hi everyone. I haven’t always been into BL (Yaoi). You could say that I was a bit of a late bloomer. However, over the last year, I went from being an newbie to obsessed expert who must have the latest releases immediately or I’d be unable to sleep at night.

So I’d like to introduce this little column to let other hardcore fans like myself know about what I’ve been reading lately in Japanese. Welcome to my BL-log! Spoilers all over the place, but really juice ones.

New This Week in Yaoi:

Unohana Sensei
“Shacho Hasumi Yo Taiho Sunzen!”

Unohana

This newest full volume comic from Unohana Sensei loosely translates to “Yo Hasumi (CEO) is on the brink of being arrested!”

It features a handsome, wild, and adventurous CEO who, due to seemingly endless scandals covering the news at all hours of the day, has to temporarily take up residence in a 5-star hotel in Tokyo. When an elite bellman mistakenly “rescued” Hasumi from jumping out the window to his death (he was just looking at the birds), he accidentally injured his hand. Hasumi stops Sugo (the bellman) from reporting the incident by requesting him to be his personal exclusive attendant for the remainder of his stay in the hotel.

Hasumi quickly identifies Sugo as gay, even though he is straight himself. Sugo is actually an exclusive top, so suffice it to say he is deeply dismayed when Hasumi wants to make his first gay experience topping another guy into another “first experience” for Sugo, too.

This manga is filled with funny and cute humor, a captivating story with drama, complex and interesting characters, and a whole lot of really ecchi scenes that will knock your socks off.

Seme vs. Seme…. quite honestly might be one of my favorite tropes. Well done!

We love Unohana here at the English Renta! so I can’t wait to get this one translated as soon as possible. This was my favorite volume of theirs so far, and that’s saying something. There’s no way we’d let this one slip away.

B.Pilz Vol.7
(Link to Website)

B.Pilz is a Yaoi magazine that we just began working with this year on the English side of Renta! It has some really nice manga in circulation!

The most recent edition, Vol.7, came out this week in Japanese and normally I would wait for translations but when I heard “Haruta” and “new series” I ran as fast as I could to the Japanese Renta! and purchased the whole magazine for myself.

We’ve got a lot of these titles coming your way in English very soon, but here’s a bit of a teaser for Haruta’s new one:

ハイスクールラララブ act.1
High School La La Love!

haruta-1 (1)

Summary:

Hinata’s parents decide (rightfully so, I think) that he is incapable of living by himself while they go abroad for work, so before his new high school life begins, he moves in with a family friend who happens to have a child of their own around the same age. Hinata finds himself in heaven when he discovers that it’s a gorgeous guy who is exactly his type.

Too busy fantasizing about his new perfect romance-filled high school life, he gets a little too excited, and “Aki-chan” walks in on him taking care of business. (And on his very first day living in a new house as a guest – how naughty.) Hinata, although confused by the exciting turn of events that followed, is naturally overjoyed by all this. However, when school begins the next day, Aki-chan is already acting cold and standoffish again.

To be continued…

Other series in this issue include:

俺たちナマモノ?です act.1
Oretachi Namamono? Desu

都合のいい女 act.5
Tsugou no Ii Onna

よこしまMOOBSTRETCH act.5
MOOBSTRETCH: Stretch Session Obsession

いとしいひと act.5
My Love

All of these series are also amazing, and I know for a fact we have several of them on the way. Please hold your breath as we bring great things to you in English. Thank you for reading with me!

The World According to Fujoshi

I just realized I’ve been working here for more than 6 months! (Why!? HOW!?)

It’s been a wild ride and I’ve learned so many things, especially from my beloved fujoshi senpai.

Today I asked them several questions about Yaoi, and they delivered.

I just realized I’ve been working here for more than 6 months! (Why!? HOW!?)

It’s been a wild ride and I’ve learned so many things, especially from my beloved fujoshi senpai.

Today I asked them several questions about Yaoi, and they delivered.

Question 1: What are some of your favorite tropes?

  • Fake (pretend) marriage scenarios
  • Fake (pretend) boyfriend scenarios
  • Fake (pretend) anything scenarios, really
  • Rivals
  • Getting locked in or stuck somewhere (like an elevator or car, or restricted in the sense of “I can’t use my hand because of this injury so I need you to help me out!”)
  • Forced to work together when they “hate” each other
  • Straight guys experimenting and realizing they’re not straight
  • Oh my god, there’s only one bed, what ever shall we do.
  • Comforting someone who is hurt, or a confession of love in a very dangerous and emotional situation, “hopefully with injuries”
  • Historical or future (any time period that isn’t present works, apparently)

Question 2: What is your favorite type of seme?

  • “One who doesn’t rape the uke.”
  • “I don’t have a favorite type of seme (or uke) because I prefer ‘reversible’ couples.”

Question 3: What is your favorite type of uke?

  • “An uke who is actually a man and not just a weak female character disguised as a dude.”
  • “Uke who are ‘enthusiastic’ in bed.”

Question 4: What would life be like if the world turned into Yaoi?

  • Unanimous: “There would be no women.” (except for side characters, supporting cast, someone to make the main character jealous, and maybe that one girl who pops in to supply advice.)
  • Unanimous: “Everyone would be gay.”
  • The number of sick days taken off work would increase for all men across the board.
  • You would have to avoid peeking into the nearby forest during summer festivals, or alleyways downtown, or stairwells at the office, etc…
  • You would see a lot more body coverage at swimming pools as men began to be self-conscious and cover up.
  • “Faceless background characters” would appear as a highly sought-after and lucrative occupation.

If you have any questions, or answers of your own to the above questions, please share!

Review: Positive

Harada fans, fear not. (Actually it would be wise to fear a little bit, but setting that aside for the moment…) POSITIVE is here, and it will help you distract you from the sexy sadness that NEGATIVE left imprinted permanently on your hearts!

Harada fans, fear not. (Actually it would be wise to fear a little bit, but setting that aside for the moment…) POSITIVE is here, and it will help you distract you from the sexy sadness that NEGATIVE left imprinted permanently on your hearts!

POSITIVE

POSITIVE features several different stories, all of which I love dearly.

The Messiah’s Cursed Day / The Messiah’s Choice

This first story starts out with an exclusive top whose talented tongue (and other parts) have touched almost everyone… that is, except his best friend, who we now find him crying to at the usual bar. The infamous top has finally been topped, and isn’t taking it well…

Messiah 1Messiah 2Messiah 3Messiah 4

Read More to find out whether or not he can resist the firm touch of the only guy who ever snuck in his back door, and how he reacts when he finds out his supposed best friend was the one who hired the guy to get all up in there in the first place.

Space Tentacles / Space Tentacles! / Space Tentacles!!

Once upon a time, in a galaxy near and dear to our hearts, the galactic space wars raged on, creating a whole group of people in dire need of a soft touch and a little satisfaction.

Enter our heroes, the professor and his young nubile assistant, who have arrived just in time to save the newly discovered tentacle monster population which has been hunted to near extinction, what with the high demand and all. Only they will be able to study the slick, slippery creature and revitalize the dwindling… population numbers.

Space Tentacles 1Space Tentacles 2Space Tentacles 3Space Tentacles 4

Do I really have to sell you on this? It’s funnier and sexier than you could possibly imagine, and Harada does not skimp on highly detailed x-ray views of exactly how many tentacles are trying to get at the prostate all at once. Go check it out!

Perverse Love, Star-Crossed Love

Shaving right past the first scene where these two lovebirds play around with some rather feisty foreplay, our dark-haired friend gets his revenge on his lover with a cigarette in his mouth and razor blade in hand.

Perverse Love 1

Skipping ahead again because we’re totally PG here…

Perverse Love 2Perverse Love 3Perverse Love 4

Well. I am speechless, but this was… ALL the adjectives. Cute, intense, intimate, hilarious, dark, light, but most importantly, sexy and entertaining.

If you enjoyed this Harada manga, please write a review on our site! Yatamomo Volume 3 will be out on the 18th this month, and I know it’s incredibly popular, but if I am being perfectly biased and unfair, this is by far my favorite Harada manga! So I’d love for whoever loves it to let their friends know they can find it at Renta!

(and then tell me which story was your favorite, too… because I can’t choose.)

April Showers

Hey everyone. I thought I’d share with you a bit of what’s coming soon for our selection of full-volume Yaoi manga this month!

How Do We Choose What Manga Goes On The Site?

How do we curate what manga goes up on Renta!?

Well… beyond the first step of actually negotiating directly with publishers to get permission to translate and sell their manga legally on our site, there ARE times when we technically have permission to do certain manga and choose not to.

I know that sounds wild and outrageous, but we do have standards, you know!

1. No child pornography

Family Situation
Cutie Pies Must Be Protected At All Costs

Though child pornography is illegal in Japan, as it should be, it is NOT illegal if it is drawn. That means there is some manga out there with fictional kids getting abused. Interestingly, in illustrated form it is also legal in America and Britain but not in Australia.

Legal or not, we still hold the right to decide not to translate or sell works that include underage children. We also extend this to flashback scenes of tragic backstories, so unfortunately this does sometimes pop up as a reason we decline certain manga.

However, lots of manga features juniors and seniors in high school in Japan, so the youngest you’ll see is 16 years old. (If we excluded high school love stories from our list, you’d never see any manga get translated at all!) Occasionally something might slip through when the artist decides in chapter 20 of an ongoing series that they need to traumatize us, but we try to prevent this from happening as best we can.

2. Bestiality

Threads of Love 2
10% pup? Fantastic! — 100% pup? Bad boy.

This is another line we choose not to cross. I’ve seen a lot of manga in the omegaverse genre that have been featuring full-out humanoid animals covered in fur. Unfortunately you won’t see these on our site.

The only animals allowed to do naughty things in our manga are of the tentacle’d variety.

Never fear though – Animal ears and tails are hugely popular, and we do not discriminate against cuteness.

3. Gang Rape

This is too upsetting to purposefully share with readers in English, so if there’s penetration, there’s no translation.

4. Cross-generational incest

Step-siblings? Go for it!
Cousins? Alright.
Siblings or Twins? Not great, but okay!
Parent/Uncle and Child? NOPE.

sick
These guys aren’t siblings, I just really like this cover.

I hope that explains why occasionally there will be a manga out there that we love but that we are unfortunately unable to translate and share on our site. I don’t mean to write off all the problematic manga we DO publish as perfectly fine and not upsetting on occasion, but please keep in mind that there are a lot of factors at play, cultural differences just being one of them, and ultimately our goal is to share as much fun and sexy manga with our readers as possible.

As we continue to grow and have more say in what gets translated, I know that the genre will grow with us, and artists will continue creating more and more content that surprises us in pleasant ways, as opposed to just knocking our socks off : )
